Transport Minister Mike Hammah has disclosed government is reviewing the National Road Safety Act in a bid to transform the Road Safety Commission into an Authority.
Mr Hammer says the renewed mandate will empower the commission to demand compliance and set higher standards for all stakeholders.
He disclosed this in a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Transport Minister Dzifa Attivor at the mid-year review conference of the National Road Safety Commission in Kumasi.
Between January and June this year the nation recorded 6,219 accident cases involving 8,594 vehicles which resulted in 4,470 injures and 880 fatalities.
The Commission says as part of efforts to achieve single digit fatality rate by the year 2015, it is targeting the involvement of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as well as local communities in road safety campaigns.
Executive Director, Noble Appiah, says the commission needs to adopt new strategies to bring sanity on the roads.
