An unidentified armed robber, believed to be in his early 20s, has been lynched by an angry mob at Madina, a suburb of Accra, for attempting to snatch a lady's handbag. The deceased suspect was said to be a member of four other robbers who, on two separate motorbikes had gone on an 'operation' around the Madina Ritz Junction and succeeded in snatching a lady's handbag containing some money and mobile phone. However, in their attempt to flee, the suspect was left behind by his colleagues and was given a hot chase by the angry mob from the Madina Ritz Junction to Doku Memorial Hospital Area. Narrating the incident to the Daily Guide, the Madina District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Paul Ayitey, said when the mob caught up with the suspect he brandished a machete and threatened to slash or kill anyone who would dare come near him. He said the mob was not perturbed and through their resilience managed to corner him and 'bombarded' him with missiles like stones and other objects. According to Mr. Ayitey, immediately the police got a hint of the situation, Detective Lance Corporal John Adjei and some other personnel were dispatched but it was too late as the mob had, executed the suspect in cold blood. "Investigations are under way to identify the suspect. Meanwhile, the body has been deposited at the Police Hospital awaiting autopsy," he indicated. In a related development, a 20 year old Omar Mubarak, who went on a robbery spree, snatching mobile phones and handbags from their victims, with one Kwame Owusu alias Sloppy at Agbogba, near Madina, a suburb of Accra escaped death when he was saved by the police from being lynched by irate mob. Omar and Kwame were said to have gone to a shop at Agbogba on their motorbike on the pretence of buying iced water. According to Mr. Ayitey, Kwame had taken a strategic position at a distance on a motorbike used in their operations while Omar went to the shop and feigned interest in men's briefs on display in the shop. Just as the lady entered the shop to serve Omar, he quickly picked some of the items on display and the lady's handbag and pointed a knife at the lady, threatening to kill her if she dared raise alarm. Ina split second, as mentioned by the District Commander; Omar had joined his colleague on the motorbike and sped off. The lady, in her desperation threw the sachet of water at them which attracted the attention of two young men in their car and realizing the situation gave the motor riders a hot chase until the suspects ran into a ditch. They were said to have attempted restarting the engine but it could not respond and as the shout of 'thief', 'thief' intensified and was drawing mob around, Sloppy quickly sensed danger and bolted leaving Omar to face the mob. The irate mob pounced on him and gave him some beatings, preparing him for 'execution' by stripping him naked but when news got to the Agbogba Police; they quickly rushed to the scene and managed to save Omar from 'execution'. He was subsequently handed over to the Madina District Command where the District Commander said he would be put before court for attempted robbery. Chief Supt. Ayitey appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands and mete out instance justice to suspected criminals.
