The father of a taxi driver who has been blinded through an acid attack by car snatchers is appealing to the public to assist him to settle a 10 million medical bill for his son.Making the appeal through the Times in Accra yesterday, Mr Mathew Agbenyega, 47, a farmer of Kumikrom, near Asamankese, showed the medical report of his son, Isaac Acquaye, 25 from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital which indicated that he was brought there "with acid burns on the face, neck and the of vision in both eyes." The report was signed by Mr A.B. Paintsil, Consultant Surgeon.Isaac was admitted at the Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre on April 16 and on May 2 and June 6, he underwent plastic surgery which accrued a medical bill of 10,160,000.00 cedis.Mr Agbenyega said he cannot pay the bill because he is poor. His son who was discharged on June 12 cannot leave hospital until the bill is settled.Narrating the sequence of events that led to his son's tragedy, Mr Agbenyega said that about 8 pm on April 11, two men hired Isaac’s taxi cab near Adeiso in the Awutu Efutu Senya District.At Agona Swedru, the men, in a attempt to steal the car, splashed acid on him but before he could be blinded by the acid, he grabbed the ignition key and threw it away.He was rescued by residents of a nearby village who heard his shouts for help and rushed him to the Swedru Hospital.Due to the nature of the burns, he was referred to the Breman Asikuma Hospital from where he was transferred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for surgery.Mr Agbenyega said the Swedru Police who are handling the case are yet to make any arrest. He said even though the owner of the taxi cab has "been of great help, they still need assistance to raise money to defray the bill.Source: The Ghanaian Times
