Real Tamale United (RTU) on Sunday lifted themselves up from their recent poor runs to thump visiting Tano Bofoakwa 2-0 in their Onetouch Premier League encounter at the Kaladan Park on Sunday.
RTU scored a goal in each half to grab the three maximum points, which still leave them at the bottom rungs of the league and stare relegation in the face.
Nasiru Ghani opened the scores for the home side as early as the 12th minute to send the stadium into wild jubilation and in anticipation of a goal harvest which never was.
The match was termed "A do and die affair” for RTU and their teeming supporters who saw their dangerous perch at the bottom of the league table as a clear danger they might have to fight relegation. The league now has seven more games to go.
After the early goal, the RTU players tried hard to increase the tally but keeper Massah Issaku stood firm between the posts and the RTU strikers.
Bofoakwa had equal scoring chances but poor shooting, offside positioning and lack of focus denied them the chance to equalize before Class One Referee Charles Dawuna whistled to bring the first half to an end.
After the recess, both teams made substitutions to strengthen their attack but it was RTU who benefited as they were able to add another goal in the 78th minute through Faisal Mohammed.
The goal came after Bofo’s keeper Issaku failed to make a first time save of Joseph Adjei's shot for the ball to bounce back and which Mohammed ran to tap into the yawning net.
All efforts by the visitors to redeem at least a goal proved futile as the pressure continued to mount on them before referee Dawuna brought proceedings to an end after two minutes of time added on.
