The Chief Executive Officer of the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) says they will be rolling out a new housing scheme in February. The programme is expected to be implemented in all 60 beneficiary districts under the Savannah ecological zone. The project will be collaboration between the private sector and the various District Assemblies with the aim of rehabilitating damaged housing infrastructure to withstand natural disasters. It will also facilitate the development of a structured and a more robust housing scheme to provide a structurally improved but affordable housing to replace the weaker ones with the use of improved designs, techniques and local materials. The Chief Executive Officer of SADA, Alhaji Gilbert Iddi made the statement in speech read on his behalf at a day’s work shop in Wa. The workshop was attended by some District Chief Executives, Presiding Members and District and Municipal Planning Officers. Alhaji Gilbert Iddi said the project will support local capacity development in construction thereby creating employment opportunities for the productive poor. Throwing more light on the new housing scheme, a consultant to the project, Salifu Mahama stated that the programme is designed to promote the use of the hydra form technology by supporting the district assemblies to launch a publicity drive on the housing programme. He further stated that 500 new housing units will be constructed every year under the scheme, over one thousand jobs will be created and above all 50 Youth Enterprises Project across the northern savannah ecological zone will be set up. Mr. Salifu said once the project is been implemented, the poverty level of the people will reduce and will raise the living standards of the people. ‘‘But their greatest benefit will the structures that will be left which will not require perennial rehabilitation,’’ he added. The chief director of the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council (UWRCC), J.B. Atuguba welcomed the move by the SADA, saying any technology to improve the living structures of the people, will go a long way in reducing the poverty of the people.
