District Chief Executive for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, Isaac Dramani Mumuni has pledged to work in the next few years to remove all schools currently studying under trees in the district. Speaking at the Commissioning of a three unit class room block cum three unit teachers quarters, Mr. Dramani was emphatic that schools under trees will be a thing of the past in the district. The 520,000.00 cedis projects were funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project is a grant from the people of Japan as a token of friendship and cooperation between Japan and the Republic to improve access to basic education in deprived areas. Mr. Dramani stated that since he took over as the District Chief Executive in 2010, the assembly has reduced significantly the number of schools that were under trees. ‘‘Under the better Ghana agenda, we have reduced from 60 to 23 the number of schools that were under trees and it is my hope that the next four years will see us overcome it." He thanked the Japanese government for the project and assured them that the project will be put to good use. On a request made by the community members to include some of the schools in the District in the Ghana School Feeding Programme, the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district chief executive said plans are far advanced to do that. He bemoaned the fact that the new school is currently being manned by two senior high school graduates who are not professional teachers and appealed to the Ghana Education Service to post teachers to the school. ‘‘To be honest with you if you have such a facility without teachers, it means that the facility will not achieve its intended purpose. All what we need is for the Ghana education service to post two or three trained teachers to the school to compliment the efforts of the senior high school graduates,’’ he appealed. He admonished residents of the community to optimize the use of the facility and not allow goats and other animals to take over. The deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Charles Ahetor-Tsegah stated that the project is an indication of the long standing friendship between the two countries. He hoped that the project will continue to strengthen friendship between the two countries. He stated that in line with the better Ghana agenda, the government believes that education is an important pillar through which the people will become developed and will ensure that they contribute to the development of their communities. He encouraged the community members to take advantage of the facility and send their wards to the school in order for the project to achieve it intended purpose. The Acting headmaster of the school, Nuopo Sey John appealed to the government to construct another three unit classroom for them to take care of the lower primary pupils because the current structure they are studying in is a death trap.
