Schools that have recorded new coronavirus cases in the last two weeks have been asked to have their student’s vacation delayed.
Speaking at a press conference, on Thursday, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Aboagye, said that an assessment of contacts will be done in those schools with positive cases.
This assessment, he explained will reveal whether students can safely go home or will have to wait till they are given the green light.
This comes after some schools recorded Covid-19 cases barely a month after schools resumed on Monday, June 15.
Accra Girls School, Arch Bishop Porter Girls, Mawuli SHS, Bishop Herman College, Mawuko Girls and Dabala SHS are among schools that recorded coronavirus cases.
Some were sent to the hospital and returned in time to begin their exams while others were asymptomatic and treated in schools.
After nearly two months of being in school, the students are prepping, once again, to go home after finishing their West African Senior High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on Friday, September 4.
However, the GHS and the Ghana Education service say they do not want to take chances and risk a bigger spread by not having the assessment of cases in the schools.
Meanwhile, schools that did not record anay case are allowed to let their students return home. Others that did record cases but not in the last two weeks are also allowed to let their students go home.
“We will also urge them to abide by the Covid-19 safety protocols on their return home and serve as role models for their peers,” the institutions wrote in a joint press release.
