Scores of squatters have been rendered homeless after the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) demolished over 50 illegal structures near the Odaw drain, Wednesday.
Speaking to Joy News, one resident said at 12:30 pm they saw AMA officials approached their structures.
Explaining further, he said the task-force began to pull down their structures without any warning.
He said when they realized this, they approached the task-force to plead for some days to be given them to get their valuables to safety but this was ignored.
He described the incident as "shameful for this government”, adding for a Ghanaian to sleep on the street, it indicates that the person is facing some challenges in life.
Another resident explained that the normal practice requires before such an exercise is carried out will be to notify residents and traders before going ahead with the demolishing but said the Assembly failed to do this.
He called on the government to cease the demolition exercise so that traders and residents will be properly be informed.
The Head of the AMA Taskforce, Chief Okine said the structures were pulled down because they were affecting the dredging of the Odaw drain.
According to him, the contractors working on the drain are near the point of completion but the continued presence of the structures has halted its progress.
He refuted the claim that the Assembly did not notify residents adding everyone in the area was notified on Friday, April 8.
