The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a five-day maintenance schedule that will leave dozens of communities and industrial hubs across the capital in darkness.
Beginning Sunday, 1 March, and running through Thursday, 5 March 2026, the utility provider will implement a mix of planned and emergency infrastructure upgrades to stabilise the national grid.
In a series of public notices issued on Friday, the company’s Communications Department emphasised that the short-term pain of the outages is a prerequisite for long-term service reliability.
“ECG will undertake planned maintenance works to improve service delivery. This will result in a temporary outage,” the company stated, adding that it “regrets the inconvenience that will arise as a result of this exercise.”
Sunday kickoff: Industrial and emergency interventions
The maintenance cycle begins with operations on Sunday.
While the Trassaco Valley Enclave in the Greater Accra Region faces a six-hour shutdown (9:00 am – 3:00 pm), the Tema Region will see a total power cut for a massive industrial corridor along Western Road.
Major commercial entities, including Early Power, Apollo Steel, Tropical Cable, and Cal Bank, are all slated for the Sunday interruption.
Simultaneously, the Accra West Region will undergo emergency repairs to rectify failing equipment. La, Darkuman and Kokompe are the primary targets of this urgent intervention, which the company says is necessary to address urgent network faults.
The Mid-week Peak: Tuesday’s extensive blackout
Tuesday, 3 March, is projected to be the most disruptive day of the schedule, with simultaneous works across three regions:
- Accra East (9 am – 5 pm): Santana Market, Zion Police Station, Teshie Camp 2, Labone, and Dome Pillar 2 will be without power.
- Tema (9 am – 3 pm): Spintex Kotobabi, Community 11 (Monte Carlo area), and Community 3 will face interruptions.
- Accra West (9 am – 5 pm): Red Top, Old Barrier, and Kings University are included in the shutdown zone.
Final Phase: Thursday’s sprawling regional works
The exercise culminates on Thursday, 5 March, with the most geographically diverse set of outages. In the Tema Region, the shutdown will stretch from Jericho and Adjei Kodjo all the way to the tourism hubs of Ada Foah, Big Ada, and Aqua Safari.
In Accra East, the works will affect Ashongman Estate, Oyarifa, and Ashiyie, while Accra West residents in Medie, Sarpeiman, Tabora, and the Rockstar Area at Tantra Hills should prepare for an eight-hour disconnection.
The ECG has advised all affected customers to treat all electrical installations as live during the outage period, as power could be restored ahead of the 5:00 pm deadline. Business owners in the affected industrial zones are encouraged to adjust production schedules to avoid damage to sensitive machinery.
