The Member of Parliament for Wa East Constituency, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, along with two other National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs, has filed a motion to repeal the controversial Emissions Levy.
The motion was formally submitted in a memo to the Clerk of Parliament, calling for the levy to be abolished due to its perceived negative impact on Ghanaians.
Joining Dr Jasaw in this effort are Professor Adam Hamza, MP for Kumbungu, and Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, MP for Awutu Senya East.
The MPs argue that the levy was introduced at a particularly inopportune time, when the majority of Ghanaians are dissatisfied with the government's performance.
According to the MPs, 85% of the population believes that the government has not met their expectations, making the imposition of such a levy even more challenging for the public to accept.
In their memo, the MPs assert that the levy places an undue financial burden on Ghanaians, particularly at a time when many are struggling with economic difficulties.
They argue that the levy, rather than addressing environmental concerns, has instead exacerbated the economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens, making it an ill-timed policy.
The motion to repeal the Emissions Levy is now before the Clerk of Parliament, and its progression will depend on further debate and discussions within the House.
If the motion is adopted, it could lead to significant changes in the country’s fiscal and environmental policies.
