Mr. Sekou Nkrumah, son of Ghana's first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on Wednesday joined the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as it makes a bid to win the 2008 election. He has long announced he would join the party and spurned entreaties to join the Convention Peoples Party, (CPP) thought largely to be an offshoot of his late father’s cherished CPP.Speaking at a press conference organized by the NDC to address the current electricity crisis in the country in Accra, Sekou Nkrumah said he took the decision after he had carefully considered the potency of all the political parties. He said examining the New Patriotic Party (NPP) critically, he realized it was selling the country to imperialist forces and into enslavement, something his father spoke and stood against. Mr Nkrumah said the best option for him was to join the NDC and that he would not join any other Party that would take Ghana back into the arms of the Western powers. He said: "Ghana and Africa cannot afford to remain economically backward. It is only the Ghanaians and Africans that can change the woes into fortunes with a leader that is not self-seeking". Mr Nkrumah said in 1992 he joined other forces to fight the PNDC which was a military regime to turn the country into a constitutional rule. After Ghana returned to a constitutional rule, he said, he tried to join other political parties but found out that the NDC was a larger and strategic party which would offer him a better platform to operate and achieve his political career. Sekou Nkrumah stated that all efforts by the splinter Nkrumaist parties to achieve political power had failed and that all those who believed in the Nkrumaist agenda must join the NDC. Party members, including the Flagbearer Professor John Evans Atta Mills, Mr. Alban Bagbin, Minority Leader, Mr. Moses Asaga, MP for Nabdam, Dr. Kwabena Adjei, Chairman of the Party took turns to welcome Mr. Nkrumah into the NDC fold. Professor Mills presented an NDC-branded sash to Mr. Nkrumah to signify his formal admission into the Party.Source: GNA
