Economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi has called for Ghana to establish a formal national policy to guide the naming of public institutions, arguing the current approach risks "bastardising the history."
He made the demand during the "Newsfile" debate on renaming Kotoka International Airport.
Hosi argued the current approach is haphazard. "What I see is no method to the action," he said, insisting any change "should fit within a broad policy framework."
A proper policy, he stated, must answer core questions like whether a name honors the culture of the host community, particularly referencing the Ga people who have "given Ghana almost everything they have."
While open to change for branding, Hosi defended the Kotoka name's value, noting it has stood for 57 years across multiple governments.
"Nobody has touched that name because it represented something," he said, explaining it "reminded the military people why they shouldn't be there."
He warned against a rushed revision: "Let's not just throw Kotoka under the bus when we don't understand Kotoka. He's been of value and so has Nkrumah too."
His proposed framework requires achieving community consensus from traditional authorities before any renaming.
