The High Court in Accra has bonded six elders of Gbese, one of principal divisions in Ga Mashie in Accra in the sum of ¢50 million for contempt of court. They have been ordered to respect all the instructions of the chieftaincy tribunals and the courts of competent jurisdiction for the next two years or in default spend six months in jail with hard labour. They are Nii Adama Thompson; Nii Tetteh Ankamah, head of Tetteh Ankamah We; Nii Anum Tetteh; head of Penshiaku We (Shiawulu); Humphrey Nii Teiko Aryee, Offei Dodoo and Christopher Nettey. The respondents were said to have defied a ruling by the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs that the Gbese Stool and all its regalia be handed over to Nii Tetteh Ahinakwah, head of Naa Akua Onidin We/Akwetey Krobo Saki We and regent of the Gbese stool. The court, presided over by Justice Isaac Lartey-Young noted that even though the respondents complied with the order it was belated and had caused anxiety, fear and bitterness among the people of Gbese and therefore found them guilty.Following a plea for mitigation by counsel for the respondents, Albert Adaare, the judge decided against custodial sentence "in the interest of peace which is being nursed now".
