Slovakia has formally acknowledged Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a credible and serious basis for a definitive solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue under United Nations auspices.
This position was outlined in a Joint Statement following a meeting in Rabat on Thursday between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Slovakia’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Juraj Blanár.
“Slovakia acknowledges the Moroccan initiative, presented to the UN Secretary-General on April 11, 2007, as a basis for a definitive solution under the auspices of the United Nations,” the statement read.
The Slovak government also expressed support for Morocco’s efforts to advance the political process, emphasising the importance of compromise and a resolution consistent with the UN Charter.
“Slovakia welcomes the serious and credible Moroccan efforts to move the political process forward towards a resolution and supports reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution based on compromise, in line with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2756 of October 31, 2024,” the statement added.
Slovakia’s endorsement strengthens the growing international momentum behind Morocco’s autonomy plan, widely regarded as a realistic and constructive pathway to resolving the long-standing dispute over the Sahara.
