Officers of the Ghana Armed Forces are doubting if the man who was killed during a demolition exercise at Kasoa died of gunshot wound.
The military has therefore set up an investigative team to ascertain the actual cause of Michael Darko’s death, a member of Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament Major (rtd) Derrick Oduro told Joy News.
Michael went into coma when he was hit by what residents suspect was a bullet at the back of his head. This was during a clash between soldiers and residents at Kasoa Millennium City over a demolition exercise last week Thursday. He died the following day at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
But the military is not convinced the about 23 soldiers who went to the area to protect their land that they claimed had massively been encroached on killed the man.
“They (armed forces) actually don’t believe that bullet hit somebody’s head and the person died,” Maj. (rtd) Derrick Oduro stated.
The armed forces’ enquiry into the issue, he explained, is to “either come out with a confirmation or deny the report [by the residents]”.
He was confident the investigative team would “definitely” do a good job.
“If they have killed somebody illegally, then they will go in for it,” he assured.
Bullet wounds are quite distinct, he noted, reiterating that the team comprising other professionals such doctors would find out “whether really a bullet killed somebody or it was may be a stone that was thrown that kill that person”.
The Ghana Police Service is also investigating the case.
Meanwhile, family of Michael Darko are demanding justice. His cousin Sarah Asamoah told Joy News the family is distraught.
She demanded that the soldiers and the one who sent them should be punished by government.
She was also disappointed that she did not hear the government commenting on the issue.
