Former Chief Executive Officer of the defunct UT Bank, Prince Kofi Amoabeng has described as petty some treatments he has experienced under the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the business man, despite his bank being collapsed, he has faced numerous persecution including government causing his visa to be denied when he had to go for a medical check up in the US.
Giving more details in an interview on Kofi TV, Mr. Amoabeng said the seizure of his passport and constant appearance in court since 2018 made it impossible to go for his regular review hence the decision to appeal for visa when the opportunity presented itself.
However, government wrote to the American Embassy, alleging that he was a flight-risk.
"After government collapsed UT Bank, then my name was sent to EOCO to investigate that I have spent money. I left the bank 20 months before its collapse but the name UT and Kofi Amoabeng go hand in hand. So I understood. I was ok with the investigation and was very confident about my innocence.
"For about 2 years I was going up and down from EOCO from 2018 to 2020. Then the Attorney-General took me to court for criminal offence and for 4 years now I have been going to court on and off for them to try and prove that I am guilty of some offense.
"When I went to court, my passport was taken and I was put on a 60million Ghana cedis bail so last year when court went on recess I asked my lawyer to ask for my passport for me so i can go for medical exam in US.
"I got my passport, went to the American Embassy with all the confidence I have but the attendant asked if I had been arrested. I told him the passport was given to me by the court but he said my visa has been denied.
Continuing with his story, the ex-military officer said he sent someone to the Embassy to make some enquires.
This was when he was told that there is a letter from government and National Security asking for his visa to be denied.
"So it was that as soon as I took my passport from the court, whoever was persecuting me took a letter there that they should not give me visa.
"But it also shows to what extent some people in this government will go to persecute me and everywhere I pass I see it."
He emphasised that the experience at the Embassy was not the first or last when it comes to ill-treatment from government.
"Sometime ago, I went to a party organized by the Okyenhene. The president, vice and ministers were there.
"I went to dance even though I don't know how to dance and the Monday that I came back to Accra, CID was looking for me, another agency I have not heard of was looking for me, Special Investigation Team was looking for me and some other agencies.
"They (government officials) have all become like cockroaches. They hide in the dark and commit sin but it has shown itself several time.
"In fact someone went to the EOCO boss at the time and he said they should speak to me because I went to dance somewhere and that put pressure on them.
"So you see how we can be very petty? You have taken the person's bank from him and this small dance, you are annoyed."
The business mogul used the platform to declare his support for the NDC's 2024 flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
He stressed that knowing what the NPP has done since they took office in 2016, he is now ready to fully support the NDC and the former President.
