South Africa and Mexico Friday afternoon played a one-all, rather interesting game to open the 2010 World Cup being held in South Africa.
Below is a minute-by-minute account of proceedings
13:55 South Africa President Jacob Zumah and Fifa President Sepp Blatter officially declares the tournament opened.
13:58 National Anthem of the two countries is played. The two teams exchange pleasantries.
14:00 Referee Ravshan Irmatov, whistles as Mexico set the game underway
14:02 Nervy start for the Bafana Bafana as Itumeleng Khune in post for the host parries a low cross away but the rebound from a Mexico striker takes a ricochet for a throw.
14:13 Fernando of Mexico poorly connects a corner with his head and goes out of touch for a goal kick.
14:17 Free-kick to South Africa from 30 yards. Taken by Pienaar but goes wayward.
14:19 Juarez receives the first yellow card of the game and of the tournament.
14:20 Mexico on the break but Juarez shoots agonisingly wide.
14:28 Game still goalless but Mexico slightly ahead.
14: 31 South Africa on the break but Pienaar on the left whips in a cross but takes a ricochet for throw.
14:32 Khune keeps Bafana in the game after an instinctive save from Fernandez. The Mexican striker should have done better.
14: 33 Carlos Vela exploits the leaky South African left back, whips in a low cross but goes wide.
14:36 Bafana defence in disarray. Corner for Mexico
14:37 Vela connects with his head for what looked like a legitiate goal but ruled offside by referee Ravshan Irmatov.
14:40 Fernando gets a free header but wastes the opportunity for the opener.
14:42 South Africa win a corner but parried away but Oscar in post for Bafana.
14:43 Another corner kick taken but misses Khumalo's head by inches; the closest South Africa have come to scoring.
14:45 First half comes to an end.

15:07 Bafana Bafana makes an incursion with a sweet ball from Pienaar on the right but well cut out by Salcido.
15:09 Tshabalala puts South Africa ahead with a well struck left footer, beating Oscar Perez for the first goal.
15:15 Khune punches a goal bound shot from Dos Santos to save the blushes of the South Africans .
15:25 Teko Modise misses a glorious opportunity but credit to Javier Rodriguez who gave a body check.
15:33 Easy does it! R Marquez breaches an off-side trap and gets the equalizer for the Mexicans. Goal!
15:39 South Africa burst forward but a Pienaar pass puts Tshabalala offside.
15:42 Blanco whips a cross in but Fernandez beats his marker to it but header goes wide.
15:45 Mphela gets the opportunity to wrap up victory for the South Africans but his feeble shot hits the post and rolls out of touch.
15:50 Game over Ravshan Irmatov whistles for the end of hostilities.
