The Speaker of Parliament Joyce Bamford Addo has bid good bye to members as the fifth Parliament was officially dissolved, Friday January 4, 2013.
After four years of steering affairs in the House, the Speaker in a slow, soft and emotional tone- characteristic of her style- bid farewell to the members.
“Having been together for four years, I shall surely miss all of you. It is now time to finally say good bye,” the speaker said.
Bamford Addo became the first female Speaker after she was nominated by the late President John Mills and later approved by the House.
Her stewardship was hardly abrasive with both sides of the House comfortable having her adjudicating on issues.
On occasions when the house was unruly, she was heard shouting in a low yet piercing voice “order!” “order!” to members who were passionate on sometimes very controversial issues.
She takes a bow on Friday and will likely be replaced by Doe Adjaho as Speaker.
Both the Majority and Minority Leaders of the House had memories of the past four years which they shared on the floor before the House was dissolved.
Majority Leader Cletus Avoka said despite the differences in opinion especially on the controversial CI 75, he was happy with how the House reached a consensus on the matter.
The Minority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said the botched STX deal and the fraudulent judgement debt payments will surely be remembered as key issues in the fifth Parliament of the fourth Republic.
