Managing menstrual hygiene poses significant challenges for girls with special needs at Garden City Special School.
Menstruation, a natural monthly cycle for women, poses significant challenges for over 50 girls with special needs at the Garden City Special School in the Ashanti region.
These girls rely on their teachers for sanitary pads and support during this time.
The Garden City Special School houses over 100 students with special needs more than 50 of them adolescent girls, who are unable to take care of themselves during the menstruation. They are between the ages of 12 to 14 years.
Speaking to Luv FM, teachers at the school highlighted the struggles these girls encounter in managing their menstrual hygiene, especially amid rising awareness on World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
According to Nancy Baidu, a teacher at the school, “Most of the time with their condition, they are now able to fix the pad themselves and they can’t calculate their days where the flow will comeÂ
“So most of the time, they stain themselves before they come for you to clean them and fix them properly for them, we bath for them using Dettol. Only a few of them can bath for themselves, but the rest that can’t we do it for them.
“Some of the students are unable to purchase sanitary pads due to increasing prices.
Moreover, financial constraints prevent some students from purchasing sanitary pads.
Nancy Baido appealed to the government and non-governmental organizations for assistance, saying, “Benevolence people, individuals, and government should please help the children by supplying sanitary pads and hand gloves.
