A Fellow at Centre for Democractic Development (CDD-Ghana) says Martin Amidu's resignation as Special Prosecutor shows that the country still has a long way to go in the fight against corruption.
Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare said the politicisation of corruption-related matters by the former Attorney General gave rise to challenges that obstructed the execution of his responsibilities.
The man popularly known as Kwaku Azar maintains that for an efficacious anti-corruption system, a non-political figure should assume the office of the Special Prosecutor.
“One of the difficulties he had with the appointment of Martin Amidu was that he [Martin Amidu] was too much of a political figure.
"It was not a very good decision to set up an independent institution and man it with somebody who was so political. It was always going to be a problem,” he noted during an interview with Asempa FM on Tuesday.
His comment comes as questions concerning a personality suitable for the office of the Special Prosecutor erupt, following Mr Amidu's resignation on Monday.
In his letter to the President, the now former Special Prosecutor explained his decision for the appointment authority “to take steps to appoint a replacement to that position as required by law.”
Pursuant to the above, Prof. Asare advised that preferably, President Akufo-Addo appoints to replace Mr. Amidu, a career prosecutor who's position would not be influenced by politics.
“The lesson from that is the President chooses a very competent person who is not in the political space - a career prosecutor who will do the work, untainted by politics,” he said.
