A spiritualist, Mohammed Umar, who collected $3,000 and GH¢350 from a trader under the pretext of multiplying his money but failed to do so, was Wednesday sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment.
Umar, who hails from Niger, pleaded guilty to defrauding by false pretence and the Circuit Court convicted him on his own plea.
He, however, denied defrauding Kwabena Amakonah, one of the complainants of GH¢800 cedis.
The prosecution told the court, presided over by Mrs Ivy Heward-Mills, that a witness, Ishmael Imoro, introduced Umar to Amakonah and Bright Okyere as someone who could multiply any money given to him.
On September 7, this year, Umar took GH¢800 from Amankonah and $3,000 and GH¢350 cedis from Mr Bright Okyere to purchase oil and sheep for sacrifices with the promise to multiply the money the same day.
Umar could not honour his promise; hence, the two complainants went to his house.
The prosecution said Umar attempted to escape but he was arrested with the help of a Police Patrol Team and escorted to the Police station where he admitted collecting money from the two complainants.
