Africa Zone 5 golf event pushed back

The inaugural edition of the Africa Zone V golf championship that was supposed to be held in Nairobi this month has been pushed back to October. News of the postponement has been confirmed by the Tanzania Golf Union’s vice-chairman Joseph Tango. Tango said the ground for the postponement is based on the fact that some of the national teams within the Zone V block were interested to compete in the Africa Zone VI. The Zone VI championship that was supposed to be held this month has teams from southern African region including South Africa, Namibia, Zambia to name only a few. Teams forming the new continental block are Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan. Tango said TGU is still planning to prepare its team to feature in the Ryder Cup-formatted tournament for amateur players. The formation of Africa Zone V has automatically killed the East Africa Challenge Golf Trophy that was being competed by five teams of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi since 1999. Kenya was a dominant nation among the above named five in the Challenge Trophy inaugurated in 1999 and played at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club with Kenya beating the host nation by a half point under captaincy of the late Peter Githua.
