The St. Mary's Boys' Senior High School has climaxed its 75th anniversary with a call on government and other stakeholders to help complete the 14-unit classroom block and the asphalting of the school roads.

The celebration which was launched on May 1, 2022 at Rainbow Hotel in Takoradi by Rev. Fr. George Eduayaw Ansah, the headmaster of the school was on the theme, “75 years of quality education: the way forward in the era of covid-19 and digitalization “.

The event was attended by St. Mary’s Old Boys’ Association, (SMOBA), those in academia from sister schools, the regional education directorate and a section of the Priests and Religious of the Catholic Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi.

Professor John Victor Mensah, an old boy and the guest speaker reminded all that quality education is one that provides learners with the capabilities they require to become economically productive, develop sustainable livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and democratic societies and enhance individual well-being.

Professor Mensah, of the Department of Environment, Governance and Sustainable Development, University of Cape Coast explained the characteristics of quality education as scholarship, discipline, honesty, morality, responsibility, hard work and environmental consciousness.

He acknowledged that COVID-19 became a great accelerator in fast-tracking the global trend towards embracing modern emerging technologies in ushering transformation in lifestyle, work patterns and business strategies.

However, he cautioned that entrenched external interests, employer opportunities, as well as unfavorable consequences on employee well-being that jeopardise productivity, work-life balance, and the future of work, may prevent the adoption of emerging technology.

According to Rev. Fr. George Eduayaw Ansah, the headmaster of the school, the number of students who received single-digit aggregate in the WASSCE was higher than it was last year, with aggregate 9 as the best grade. With discipline as the school's guiding principle and committed staff, the academic performance of the school will continue to be a barometer of excellence.

He was also optimistic that the results of this year’s WASSCE will be much better as the 1,250 students were adequately prepared for the examinations.

The school also achieved some success on the areas of football, athletics, the Adomba TV STEM Quiz and the National Drill Contest. 

He however bemoaned the first round exit of the school on the National Science and Maths Quiz programme this year.

The headmaster commended benefactors and benefactress from the Catholic Church of Epiphany in Florida, USA for donating computers, tablets, projector and screen, routers, switches, UPS and a server to the ICT Lab.

He also thanked the government for giving the school a new dormitory block and a new school bus.

Rev.  Fr. Ansah singled out Mr. Ato Van Ess and his team for giving the school a new basketball court and also the Old Boys’ (SMOBA) 1969, 1982, 1983, 1991 and 1994 for sponsorship of the awards for the 75th anniversary.

The 75 anniversary was chaired by Professor Edward Ntifo-Siaw of the Department of Agric Economics and Extension of the University of Cape Coast and an old student of the school.

Also present was Very Rev. Fr. Francis Kofi Lemaire, the Vicar General of the Diocese, who represented the Bishop of the Diocese.

St. Mary’s Boys’ School was established by the Catholic Church in 1947 at Amisano in the Central Region first as a two-year certificate “B” Teacher  Training College. Its status changed in 1974 to a five-year secondary school and in 1991, the school underwent another transformation in line with the educational reform of that time. A minor seminary was attached to the school in 1987 to train Priests for the Catholic Church.
