Ms. Joyce Aryee, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Mines on Saturday advised parents and guardians against buying question papers for their wards who are preparing to write their final examinations at any educational level as the practice would eventually have adverse effects on their future career. She noted that such practices impact negatively on the children’s education as they would not be encouraged to study as expected of them. Ms. Aryee said parents should rather ensure that their wards concentrate on their studies to prepare them adequately to face any examination. She was speaking at the official opening of a 1.6 billion-cedi block for Saint John Bosco Basic School of the Good Shepherd Catholic Parish at Tema. The CEO said the bad practice was likely to affect the child while at work because he could be found wanting in certain areas as he did not take pains to learn. Speaking on the topic; “Ghana after 50; our children’s heritage”, Ms Aryee impressed on adults to lead lives worthy of emulation by the youth to prepare them to become useful future adults capable of taking up the mantle of the nation from the aged. To succeed in leaving a good legacy for the future, she admonished adults, the clergy and all able minded people to champion the crusade in nurturing the lives of the youth by instilling in them the spirit of love, discipline, Godliness, patriotism, commitment and integrity devoid of fanning ethnicity which is a recipe for chaos. Ms Aryee stressed the need for Ghanaians to bury differences among themselves, irrespective of their ethnicity or political affiliations, place the interest of the nation above all personal interests and champion the course of the nation to progress. His Grace Archbishop Gabriel Charles Palmer Buckle, of the Accra Metropolitan Catholic Diocese, who blessed the school, urged the children to emulate the qualities of Christ Jesus for His obedience, love, tolerance, discipline, sacrifice and pray unceasingly for God’s protection and guidance for cultured lives. He entreated parents and guardians to create conducive atmosphere in the homes to promote learning and ensure that their wards do their homework before going to school. Mr. J.H. Mensah, Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission told students to take advantage of the facilities provided at their schools to enhance their learning, especially with the computer to get abreast with the Information Technology. He said children have the potential of becoming great people in future and called for strict supervision by teachers, parents and guardians to enable them to develop their God given talents to improve their lives. Mr. Mensah appreciated the good work of teachers and urged them to continue with the zeal with which they work to educate the children. In welcoming address, Mrs. Vida Adorkor, headmistress of the school said student population had increased to 538 from its beginning with 72 kindergarten children in 1986 in a wooden structure.
