A strange disease which bears the semblance of Buruli Ulcer has hit Zorko, a farming community in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.Reports indicate that the disease struck the area last week when both children and adults detected small boils on their bodies.Various victims had the boils on different parts of their bodies.According to an eye witness account, only a few hours after the appearance of the boil it bursts and becomes sore and then spreads as in the case of buruli ulcer.Lawrence Yelfare, a laboratory technician at the Zorko Clinic who conducted initial investigation into the disease said he could not confirm that it was buruli ulcer while at the same time he found it to be a strange disease. One victim, Anafo Adongo who reported at a clinic at Kanga near Zorko was advised to seek local treatment because the disease was not known and so had no cure. But Ms Elizabeth Ayine, medical assistant in charge of the Zorko Health Centre appealed to patients with the strange disease to report to the clinic for attention. However, she said samples of the victims’ blood had been sent to the authorities for further investigations. The District Director of Health for Bongo, Dr Marfo, was not available to comment.Meanwhile, residents of the community have appealed to the medical authorities to rush to their aid.Source: The Ghanaian Times
