The eighth edition of the annual Street Academy Walk through some principal streets aimed at raising funds to support the upkeep of the children came off in Accra on Saturday.
The 23km Walk, which was hosted by Mamprobi-based Brigade Keep Fit Club saw about 700 people from some selected Youth clubs within the Metropolis participating.
The Walk started from the Hearts of Oak of training grounds at the Arts Centre through some principal streets including the High Street, Makola, Kojo Thompson road, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Ring Road Central, Danquah Circle, Accra Sports Stadium and back to the starting point.
Ataa Lartey, Director of the Academy said the idea behind the Walk was to raise and meet a target of 100 million cedis (10,000 Ghana Cedis) to cater for the educational and general upkeep of the children. Last year's target was 44 million cedis.
Elvis Amartey, Chairman of Brigade keep Fit Club commended the James Town, Zongo Lane and Kwashieman Youth Clubs for their support in making the Walk a success.
He said some Ministers of State and Members of Parliament have pledged financial commitments to the targeted amount and expressed optimism that the target will be achieved to meet its intended purpose.
In a related development, Right to Play, a charitable organisation organised a play time for the children to climax the event.
Madam Vera Doku, Communications Manager of Right to Play said the event was her outfit's way of supporting the Walk and pledged their fullest support in future.
The event was sponsored by Areeba/MTN, Nestle Ghana Limited, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Coca-Cola Bottling, Afro Global and Right to Play.Source: GNA
