The People’s National Convention (PNC) has asked organisers of the Arise Ghana demonstration to adopt modern practices to criticise and protest government policies.

The party says the use of street protests and old-fashioned means to express dissatisfaction in the government do not yield relevant results but only create situations like what happened on Tuesday, June 28.

“Certainly, street protest as a form of demonstration is becoming outmoded in modern democracies and protesting without providing solution is equally outmoded.

“At this material moment, the PNC is calling on fellow Ghanaians (i.e. the Arise Ghana group in particular) to rather demonstrate alternative policies that will aid the current government ameliorate the current economic difficulty,” the party said in a statement on Wednesday.

The PNC, therefore, suggested that persons interested in hitting the streets should rather channel their efforts into organising institutional lectures, public fora, submitting petitions to appropriate offices and making use of court systems to push their demands.

“PNC wish to use this medium to serve notice that we are not part of, and we do not subscribe to the Arise Ghana demo. It has come to our notice that one Awudu Ishaq is parading himself as the Communication Secretary of the party.

“The media and the general public should kindly treat him as an imposter. The Communication Secretary of the party is Mr Samuel Ayesu,” the statement added.

Arise Ghana demo

The demonstration turned violent after the Police fired tear gas into the agitated crowd to restore calm. In addition to the tear gas, the Police responded to the protestors with water cannons and rubber bullets.

Some protestors were seen pelting stones at the Police and their vehicles.

Earlier, there was a standoff between the Police and the protestors over the approved route for the demonstration.

This was after the Police tried to enforce the Accra High Court's directive that asked the protestors to move from the Obra Spot to the Independence Square.

But the protestors had wanted to march through the Ako Adjei Interchange and make a quick stop at the Jubilee house.

Arrests

The Ghana Police Service have arrested some 29 persons in connection with Tuesday’s demonstration by Arise Ghana.

The Service explained that the 29 people who are currently in custody were involved in orchestrating attacks against officers and some school children.

“Available video footages of the event are being reviewed and all other persons identified for taking part in the attacks as well as inciting the violence will be arrested and brought to face justice,” a statement dated June 28 added.

According to the statement, “the organisers of the demonstration will be arrested and put before court for the attacks and damage to public property, in line with the provisions of Section 3 of the Public Order Act, (Act 491).
