The Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured that government will ensure teaching and learning activities in pre-tertiary institutions will resume despite the strike action by three teacher unions.
On Friday, three teacher unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Graduate Teachers and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers declared an indefinite nationwide strike to register their displeasure over the appointment of the new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.
The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations is currently holding its second meeting with the teacher unions to bring finality to the strike action.
The first meeting with the unions was held last Friday but could not be concluded.
Speaking to JoyNews on the sidelines of the meeting, the Spokesperson of the GES, Yaw Opoku Mensah expressed optimism by the government to end the strike action by the close of the week.
“We expect that today, probably I am hopeful that finality will be brought to this. There will be a closure on the matter by both parties. We do not expect the strike to drag for long, tomorrow or today we could see a positive response because I am confident with the kind of engagement that has gone on so far and both parties are committed to the cause,” he said.
He appealed to teachers to resume teaching activities in various schools as negotiations with the teacher unions continue.
“Once leadership has decided to engage government on this issue, I think we need to go back and do our normal duties as teachers while we keep a close eye on all the interactions and eventually see what the future holds for us,” he stated.
