The District Chief Executive of Suhum Samuel Fletcher Cobby has accused the Suhum police of being ineffective in ensuring the enforcement of road regulations in the area.
Mr. Fletcher Cobby said the Suhum police have failed to ensure discipline on the roads thereby leading to series of road offences by taxi drivers.
He was reacting to the allegations leveled against him by some taxi drivers that the District Chief Executive has been intimidating them with the military in the area.
But Mr. Fletcher Cobby denied the allegation saying that he embarked on a swoop to arrest recalcitrant taxi drivers who flout road regulations in the area to ease congestion on the roads.
He told Adom News that he carried out the swoop with the military not with the intention to intimidate the divers but rather to enforce the law.
He stated that he resorted to the military because so far all efforts to ensure the enforcement of road regulations have proven ineffective.
He accused the police of “being in bed” with the taxi drivers in Suhum and that has made the enforcement of the law difficult.
Mr. Fletcher Cooby stated that the swoop with the military was necessitated by continuous complaints by leaders of the various transport associations like the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), Progressive Transport among others on the indiscriminate use of the shoulders of the road as lorry stations by some taxi drivers in the area.
“The leadership of transport associations held a meeting and petitioned my office and threatened that if the police do not stop the recalcitrant drivers from embarking on their illicit activities, the main lorry station and also operate along the shoulders of the road,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, some of the taxi drivers who spoke to Adom News denied the allegation by the DCE that they are indiscriminately loading on the shoulders of the road.
