The Supreme Court has given the go ahead for next week’s district Assembly level elections across the country. This was after the Attorney General’s Department and lawyer for six residents of Nungua who filed an application seeking to restrain the Electoral Commission from organizing the polls came to a compromise. The six, filed the application at the Supreme Court arguing the Legislative Instrument that mandates the EC to conduct the election was flawed. They went to the Supreme Court to seek an interpretation whether a subcommittee of parliament could add four extra electoral areas to the already 24 existing areas in the Ledzokuku Krowor district. Lawyer for the six plaintiffs, Nii Ayikwei Otoo said his clients were seeking a declaration from court that the LI 1983, was unconstitutional and that the conduct of Parliament’s committee which created some four new electoral areas had not power to do so and that their action was altra vires. The plaintiffs sought an injunction from the court on the elections in the entire country but the AG’s department agreed with the applicants that the elections will not be conducted in the four electoral areas they are contending were illegally created. Mr Ayikwei Otoo said he and his clients were satisfied with the agreement reached. He told Joy News’ Cyrus deGraft-Johnson the case may even be dropped entirely. Source: Joy News
