The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the arrest of a suspected gunman during a cordon and search operation in Binduri, as part of intensified military efforts to restore calm in the Bawku enclave.
According to a statement issued by the GAF, the operation was launched in the early hours of Monday after troops deployed at Binduri heard sporadic gunfire coming from the Binduri Central Market area.
“Personnel swiftly moved to the location and cordoned off the area. A combined team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, supported by the Police, proceeded to conduct detailed search operations to identify and apprehend those involved,” the statement read.
It further stated that during the operation, "one suspected gunman was arrested and subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation."
In addition to the arrest, the troops retrieved a cache of weapons and military gear including an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, an empty M16 rifle magazine, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, and a helmet.
According to GAF, later the same day, the military thwarted an attempt by unidentified gunmen to infiltrate Binduri, adding that an exchange of gunfire ensued between the armed men and security personnel, forcing the attackers to retreat.
The situation has since been brought under control. The military has increased patrols in the area and remains on high alert to respond to any emerging threats.
“We are working closely with other security agencies to ensure the safety and peace of the region,” the GAF statement added.
It also urged residents and the general public to support ongoing efforts by cooperating with security personnel to restore normalcy.
