The Deputy Minister for Education has said senior high schools and junior high schools will pick up their academic syllabus from where they stopped when the shutdown of schools was ordered.
“It is not possible to teach the syllabus to everybody at home so we are going to pick up from where we left off,” Yaw Osei Adutwum said on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, Tuesday.
“I want to assure parents that if your child is at home and for some reason, not of your own fault that they are not getting access to TV when your child comes back to school, it’s not that everything on TV will not be taught again,” he said to parents on the show.
On March 15, President Nana Akufo-Addo ordered the closure of all schools and universities in Ghana as his administration moves to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
This new directive forced a number of institutions to migrate teaching and learning activities to various online platforms.
The Deputy Minister explained that the various platforms are to keep students abreast with their academics and do not act as a replacement for the syllabus because they are not mandated by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
“These platforms are just to help them keep abreast and it’s not to say that everything has been done in the classroom on TV and therefore you are done. This is an intervention, a medium to help you brush up,” he stressed.
“Take it seriously but it’s not to say that when you go back to school your teachers are just going to continue from where the TV left off.”
“I don’t want children to be anxious, that they are being left behind. It’s not like the universities where they are continuing with their academics,” he added.
