Authorities of the Takoradi Polytechnic have stated that they are committed to maintaining discipline on campus and will not backtrack.“We on course and will not be daunted by unfounded accusations by students,” Dr Samuel Obeng Apori, Principal of the Polytechnic has said.Dr Apori’s statement was in reaction to allegations by the Student’s Representative Council of the institution that he had had affairs with some lady students on the campus. He said that his problem with the SRC started early this year during a bye election. He said a female student reported to him that another lady student vying for the Secretaryship was not qualified and so he personally investigated the matter.“Incidentally, the lady who reported the case was also not qualified, so I nullified the elections. That was the beginning of the problem,” Dr Apori said. He, emphasized that it was important that the right thing was done and that was exactly wheat he did.Dr Apori said he had an open-door policy and welcomes dialogues from anybody but that did not mean he had been having affairs with the ladies.“I am resolute on my stand on indiscipline and I will not backtrack,” Dr Apori said and added it was for that reason that he banned the numerous church activities on campus and had launched consistent attacks on ‘wee’ smoking in campus.“We need to maintain discipline so as to achieve our objectives of making Takoradi a centre of excellence,” Dr Apori said.An Accra daily reported the dismissal of 71 students of the Takoradi Polytechnic for various offences ranging from rape and alcoholism to poor academic performance.Source: The Ghanaian Times
