The problem of the use of illegal means to tap energy from the national grid is a major factor disturbing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Although, the ECG is fighting hard to check the problem, much progress has not been made towards that direction. The perpetrators of this evil act take consolation in the fact that laws on the illegal tapping of energy from the national grid are not deterrent enough. This is the main reason why The Enquirer will like to urge the new Minister of Energy to quickly liaise with Parliament to introduce new laws that will provide stiffer punishment to those who engage in such acts. For us, Dr. Oteng-Adjei should not waste time at all on the matter if he really wants to fight the problem as he has assured. We believe that the illegal tapping of energy is having a far-reaching toll on the power distribution in the country as it is a wide-spread situation. The Enquirer is of the view that Dr. Oteng-Adjei's mandate to work towards ensuring availability and accessibility of power to every Ghanaian will be achieved to some extent if illegal tapping of energy is curtailed. We think that the laws that Dr. Oteng-Adjei is thinking of, should also factor in officials of the ECG who are also reported to condone and connive with the illegal act from the national grid. Again, we are calling on Parliament not to drag its feet when the Minister of Energy makes moves to quell the social canker of illegal tapping of energy. We are of the strongest conviction that with collective effort the problem of having some misfits eating into the national grid illegally can be dealt with to save the country’s energy sector. The Enquirer will like to seize this opportunity to call on Dr. Oteng-Adjei to walk his talk as he has enough knowledge of the ministry by virtue of having served as the Director of Power for 10 years.
