The Northern Regional Police Commander ACP George Tuffuor has given the assurance that security in the region is conducive for President Atta Mills to visit Tamale. President Mills is expected to visit the regional capital, Tamale, weeks after the initial official working tour to the Region was postponed in the aftermath of a court ruling freeing 15 persons standing trial for the murder of the Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II. Some youth groups unhappy with the ruling, held the president accountable for the judgement considered unfavourable and a travesty to them, and consequently warned the president against stepping foot in Tamale. But ACP George Tuffuor told host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show that his outfit has “tightened security”, assuring that “everything is in order” for the President to arrive in Tamale on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Joy FM’s Northern regional correspondent Mahama Sayibu said about three armoured vehicles have been patrolling the streets amidst other tight security measures in Tamale. Some residents have complained about the heightened security presence in Tamale, arguing the area is a stronghold of the ruling party and that the president did not face any imminent danger to warrant such measures, says Mahama Sayibu. But ACP Tuffuor said the security measures on the ground were normal, and has not been necessitated by a threat by some youth group asking the president not to visit the region for security reason. Meanwhile, Joy FM’s presidential correspondence, Seth Kwame Boateng, who is among the presidential advance team said the area was “quiet” on Tuesday and “cool” on Wednesday morning with many residents expectant of Prof. Mills’ arrival.
