Residents of Tamale, the Northern regional capital are fuming over garbage pilling up within the central business district.According to the residents, stockpiles of refuse overflowing from containers provided by the Metropolitan Assembly have not been removed for more than two months. In an interview with Joy News, the President of the Concerned Citizens Association of Tamale, Basharu Alhassan Daballi said their complaints have fallen on deaf ears.He said residents are helpless in dealing with the situation and with the onset of the rains, mosquitoes are also having a field day, a situation he said could lead to serious consequences.“We are being told that it is diesel that the assembly cannot afford to evacuate the refuse and if the assembly cannot afford diesel to evacuate the refuse then we are in bad business,” he told Joy News and added that the situation in areas where Zoom Lion are in charge are better.Meanwhile an official of the sanitation department of the assembly Samson Akwetey, has denied claims that the Assembly is unable to fuel its vehicles to clear the garbage. He said the assembly contracted Zoom Lion to take care of the Central Business District where the refuse generation is enormous while the assembly itself took charge of the outlying city and explained that the problem is to do more with lack of resources to meet the fast growing city than the simplified fuel case.
