The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) will officially open its 7th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference on Monday, January 5, 2026, in Accra, with President John Dramani Mahama expected to perform the opening ceremony.
The conference, which is also GNAT’s 54th National Delegates Conference, is being held under the theme “Education and Development: The GES @ 50 – Reflecting, Reviewing, Revising and Growing the Profession and the Unions.” It brings together teacher representatives from across the country to deliberate on the future of education and unionism in Ghana.
President Mahama’s participation underscores the importance the government places on the teaching profession and the role of educators in national development, particularly as the Ghana Education Service (GES) marks 50 years of existence.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, is the Special Guest of Honour, while veteran statesman Opanin Kwame Pianim is chairing the conference. Prof. George K.T. Oduro, Technical Adviser to the Education Ministry, is delivering the keynote address. GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas T. Musah, is overseeing administrative and policy sessions.
The conference runs from December 30, 2025, to January 8, 2026, at the Ohene Konadu Auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), with daily sessions starting at 9:00 a.m.
Delegates are expected to adopt resolutions on teacher welfare, education policy reforms, and strategies to strengthen the teaching profession as Ghana’s education sector navigates ongoing reforms and institutional milestones.
