The Techiman South Constituency of the National Democratic Congress in the Brong Ahafo Region has debunked claims by a group in the area which is aligned to the NPP, Youth Forum, that the Municipal Chief Executive for Techiman, Mr Alex Kofi Kyeremeh, was illegally amassing wealth, to the detriment of the poor people in the municipality. The NPP Youth Forum alleged that within his two and a half years in office, the MCE had acquired a new tipper truck, two KIA Rhino, two frontier pickups, a new Mercedes Benz for his wife and had also put up two ultra-modern hotels at Taifa in Accra, all of which cost several billions of Ghana cedis. Citing reliable sources, the group further alleged that Mr Kyeremeh had a personal commission of GH¢30,000.00 on a pay loader and two tipper trucks recently purchased for the assembly, making his total commission GH¢90,000.00. However, in a quick rebuttal, the NDC challenged the said NPP youth group to provide what they termed “incontrovertible” evidence of the allegations, saying that the MCE, even before his political career, was a hardworking person, an achiever and financially sound. He had built houses at Techiman and Krobo, had plots of lands at various locations in Techiman and cars. “The said NPP youth group and their parochial paymasters should, therefore, not seek to portray Hon. Alex Kyeremeh as one who had no life prior to his political career,” the NDC in a statement said. They explained that the Merced Benz mentioned had been acquired by the MCE before the assumption of his current appointment and he had also bought the said frontier pick-ups with part of his ex-gratia from parliament for political activities. The NDC questioned how someone could take commission on machinery for which payments had not been completed, and expressed the hope that the NPP would be so kind to reveal the source of their claim. “We understand that the massive development project the municipality is seeing is a thing of discomfort to them and threatens greatly, their prospects at political power. We also understand that they lack relevant development-oriented issues to talk about and have, therefore, decided to resort to peddling falsehood and trampling on the hard-won reputation of Hon. Alex Kyeremeh,” the statement said. Mr Mumuni Saaka Adam, the Techiman South Organiser of the NDC, assured the said NPP youth group and their cohorts that many more of the development projects, namely electrification, boreholes and sanitation-related activities, as well as scholarships and bursaries, were in the offing and would soon see the light of day. The NDC stressed that the “Better Ghana” agenda would continue unabated and the people of Techiman would continue to have their fair share and that the MCE would not be distracted from the good work he was engaged in. The statement also said the MCE had decided to seek advice from his lawyers and pursue the matter in court, the outcome of which would be for the public to judge.
