The Tema Regional Police Command has foiled an armed robbery attempt at Afienya‑Mataheko, following an intelligence‑led operation that resulted in the death of four suspected robbers after a gun battle with police.
According to a press release issued by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Tema Regional Police Headquarters, ASP Dede Dzakpasu, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 29, 2025, after police acted on credible intelligence about an imminent robbery plot within the Tema Metropolis and its surrounding communities.
The statement explained that on Friday, December 27, 2025, the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) of the Tema Region received information indicating that a group of armed suspects was planning coordinated attacks.
Acting swiftly, police officers were deployed to strategic locations and placed on surveillance.
At about 1:00 a.m. on December 29, officers on patrol spotted four suspected robbers attempting to break into a residential property at Afienya‑Mataheko.
When police moved in to arrest them, the suspects reportedly opened fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
During the encounter, all four suspects sustained gunshot wounds.
Three of them—identified as Kwabena Azuwebi, also known as “Lastman”, Yaro Bawku, and Faisal—were rushed to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
The fourth suspect, Kassim Hussein, was initially arrested after being recaptured and taken to the hospital for treatment but later died while receiving medical care.
Police said they recovered several weapons and items from the suspects, including one AK‑47 rifle, one Taurus pistol loaded with six rounds of ammunition, two cutlasses, and two motorbikes—one unregistered and the other bearing registration number M‑25‑GT‑4243.
All recovered exhibits have been retained to aid ongoing investigations.
The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary pending autopsy, while investigations continue to track down and arrest any accomplices linked to the foiled robbery attempt.
The Tema Regional Police Command has reassured residents of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and has urged the public to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information to help combat crime in the region.
