Tema Metropolitan Assembly has been ranked first with a score of 77% in development in the 2015 District League Table.
At the bottom of the District League Table (DLT) is Gomoa West in the Central Region, occupying the 216th place with a score of just 37%.
According to a report by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development, Tema managed to climb up from 20th place in 2014 by improving its score and overtaking several other Districts.
The DLT aggregates development indicators in six key sectors: health, education, sanitation, water, security and governance.
The table was designed by UNICEF Ghana with the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development was launched in 2014.
In 2014, with a score of 76%, Tano South in the Brong Ahafo Region took the first place. Whilst Karaga District in Northern region finds itself in 216th place with a score of just 15%.
Sarah Hague, UNICEF’s Chief of Policy said “This year, the 2015 District League Table can intensify the scrutiny of Ghana’s development, highlighting inequity across districts. It could also be used to better allocate resources so that individual districts that rank low can be better supported.”
Among the top Districts, the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions figures most prominently whereas Volta and Northern regions stand out at the bottom of the table.
According to the table, no district from the North is found in the top 20 districts.
