Tension is mounting on the University of Ghana campus over a decision by the authorities there to convert the only male hall of residence, Commonwealth Hall, into a mixed-gender hall. The decision was taken by the university’s Executive Committee in response to recent disturbances by students of the hall, which authorities say brought the name of the university into disrepute. Students of the Commonwealth Hall have kicked against the move to turn it into a mixed-gender hall, describing it as an attempt to break their front. They have vowed to resist the change but authorities at the University of Ghana are however unfazed by the students’ agitations. Public Affairs director, Stella Amoah, told Joy News the decision is final but indicated that name of the hall will not change as some of the students believe. The students, some half naked, chanted songs in front of the Chancellor and former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Mr Annan was in the company of other visiting personalities. Whilst investigation to bring to book persons who engaged in the act is underway, the University of Ghana says the Vandal City, which has for long been an only-boys hall of resident will be a mixed-gender graduate students hall. The university believes that, by this move, Commonwealth Hall will not display the notoriety it has been known for over the years.
