One in every ten (11.9%) households in Greater Accra’s urban centres lived in uncompleted buildings or unconventional structures as of 2021.
This is according to the Ghana Statistical Service’s (GSS) 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) General Report on Water and Sanitation.
The report revealed that over a quarter of a million (316,116) households in Ghana’s urban areas were living in either uncompleted buildings (79,721) or unconventional structures (236,395) as of 2021.
“Unconventional structures comprise wooden structures (143,261), kiosks or poly kiosks (78,016), or metal containers (15,118),” the report explained.
All the other 15 regions recorded percentages below the national urban average (5.4%), the report added.
The data was highlighted in commemoration of World Cities Day which is observed annually on 31st October to end the observance of Urban October which was instituted to raise awareness of the challenges facing urban areas.
World Cities Day is to raise awareness about global urbanization and push for global cooperation in sustainable urban development.
