The Acting Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Michael Whyte Kpessah has mounted a strong defence of the decision to deploy national service personnel to direct traffic.
This follows concerns by the public about the propriety of the decision and its usefulness for the training of the personnel.
Speaking at a ceremony to pass 25 personnel at the Police Training School in Accra, Dr Kpessah Whyte called for an end to what he described as cynicism.
“I don’t think those concerns are justified. In the police service, there are people who hold PhDs yet they are on the street for us, how much more those who are finishing university.
“This country can only be built by Ghanaians and as Ghanaians we must embrace this initiative”.
He said the programme is intended to reignite the spirit of patriotism, love for country, service to God and mankind.
He urged the public to support the programme in order to bring sanity on the various roads in the capital.
“This nation can only be built by Ghanaians and we must roll up our sleeves and move down to where it matters most. What National Service is doing now as part of its rebranding module, is to meet the state at the point of its needs”.
Some of the service personnel who spoke to Joy News said they are ready to support the nation, no matter the sacrifices required.
