Hundreds of Ghanaian movie lovers thronged the Silverbird Cinemas at the Accra Mall and West Hills Mall on Friday, 19th September 2025, for the premiere of The Fisherman, a film written and directed by Zoey Martinson.
The audience also included renowned creatives, media personalities and other public figures.
The Fisherman tells the story of Atta Oko, an old Ghanaian fisherman who collaborates with a talking fish and three young people on a journey to the city to secure a loan that will enable them to buy their own boat.
Atta Oko, played by Ricky Adelayitor, dreams of becoming the boat chief of his town after years of hard work. However, when the time comes, the mantle goes instead to the arrogant son (Ajeezay) of the outgoing chief (veteran actor Fred Amugi). Despite his education, the outgoing chief’s son is clueless about fishing and life at sea.
Frustrated, Atta Oko encounters a talking fish. His superstitious instincts makes him believe the fish has a traditional message for him.
He later meets three young friends: Kobina (William Lamptey), Shasha (Endurance Dzedzo) and Emmanuel (Kiki-Romi), who want to form their own boat crew. Together, they set off for the city in search of money to buy a boat, with their adventure forming the core of the plot.
Patrons at the premiere gave rave reviews, praising the film’s production quality, storyline and characterisation.
According to film critic and writer Tony Asankomah, The Fisherman “reminds you of the prospects and potential of the Ghanaian film industry and its potential to tell stories anchored to our folklore while also tackling present-day themes and issues in an entertaining way.”
Being Ghana’s first official selection to the Venice Film Festival, The Fisherman has also won an award at the Los Angeles Pan African Film Festival.
The award-winning film was produced by Luu Vision Media.
