The UK and Ireland Chairman of the National Democratic Congress has noted that the negativity of political campaigns on radio and television by the opposition National Patriotic Party has been on the rise, that it is destroying the quality of information getting to the public, that could depress voter turnout and a host of other ills.
Horace Nii Ayi Ankrah stated that, “the NPP campaign of playing of tapes, unsubstantiated allegations and flimsy attacks on President Mahama on radio stations , which are non-flyers, suggests that negative campaigning are indeed becoming more prevalent ahead of the general elections, which represent an unmistakeably new low in the NPP’s contribution to the Ghanaian politics”.
In agreeing to the fact that voters are usually moved by positive or negative emotions, Nii Ayi Ankrah said “however, if you are trying to change course, as the NPP are desperate to, you generally have to elicit emotions such as anxiety or anger along with enthusiasm for your case, particularly when your point is that an incumbent has behaved in ways that are incompetent or unethical”.
“The NPP is struggling, with their new style of campaigning, because the NDC party and the government are competent and of high moral grounds coupled with lack of interest of the NPP style by voters,” he posited.
He called on Ghanaians to take time and read through the NDC manifesto which highlights the NDC government’s achievements in the last four years and the way forward in advancing the better Ghana Agenda.
