The mystical Paga crocodile pond is made up of live crocodiles believed to have its oldest crocodile’s age as 90 years old. These reptiles are indeed huge in sizes and deserve a physical look by another.
The Paga crocodile pond is about 44 kilometers from the Upper East Regional capital Bolgatanga.
The region, located in the north-eastern part of northern Ghana shares a common border with Bukina Faso.
In a normal sense, one would say crocodiles are wild and deadly creatures, but crocodiles from Paga pond are lively, friendly and very entertaining. They are touchable, and ready to take pictures with patrons, but all these can only be done after a rite has been performed for these reptiles by their guards.
Historically, it is believed by residents of Bolgatanga and the entire region that a very long time ago, one of the huge crocodiles led a dying, dehydrated man to the pond to quench his thirst without causing any harm to him. The man after recovering his strength pronounced the crocodile pond “sacred” and ordered that no man born of a woman should harm any of these reptiles.
Nevertheless, it is also believed by the people that the soul of every member of Paga has a crocodile in the pond.
The major ethnic group in Bolgatanga is the Gurensi. These people are mostly Moslims, Traditionalists and Christians.
The people of the region are mostly identified by their way of life and dressing. Their festivals and culture and their favorite Fugu dress makes them unique from people living in the southern part of the country. Not forgetting one of their well prepared dishes: Tuo Zaafi (TZ) meal; this meal goes down well with Coubewa soup.
Upper East Region is one of the nicest tourist attraction spots you simply can’t afford to miss when you are in Ghana.
