Former president J.A. Kufuor has spoken against what he calls dangerous personality cults developing in the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This personality cults, he argues, contributed significantly to the loss of power by the NPP in the last elections to the now ruling National Democratic Congress in 2008.
Speaking at the NPP National Delegates’ Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Mr Kufuor said, “We must shun anything that smacks of anything like personality cults.”
He said having been honoured by being elected to the presidency on successive occasions, he was not indispensable and that whenever he was seen to be constituting himself into a cult, members of the party should reject him, like any other person.
According to him, one enduring trait of the NPP is respect for each other regardless of the person’s position.
He said adherence to democratic tenets expressed through credible and transparent elections of the party’s leaders was what the party was noted for and called for a concerted effort to avoid anything that could divide the ranks of the party.
The former president said Ghanaians were yearning for the return of the NPP to salvage the economy and other sectors of the country’s development that were being mishandled by the National Democratic Congress.
He touted the National Health Insurance Scheme, infrastructural development, good governance, inter alia, that his administration implemented and which were now in distress owing to the lack of ideas of the NDC government.
