The Tamale Central MP has cast doubt on the effectiveness of the Vigilantism and Other Related Offenses Act, 2019 (Act 999) which disbands the operation of any vigilante groups in the country.
Inusah Fuseini in an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight Monday, said enacting a law alone cannot head on deal with the vigilantism in the society.
According to him, it will take a government who is committed to eradicating people who engage in such illegal activities to totally get rid of such groups from the country.
This, the Tamale Central MP argued, the Akufo-Addo government does not have the mettle to enforce.
“Providing a legal mechanism to deal with vigilantism does not actually end vigilantism because it requires the commitment, dedication and focus by the ruling government to demonstrate to the people of the country that they appal vigilantism,” he said.
The former Lands and Natural Resources Minister further noted that it took a lot of effort from the Constitutional Legal Committee as well as certain Non-Government Organisations to redesign the Vigilante Bill before it was pass.
Hence, he said it is saddening that government is showing little or no effort to implement it.
