The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pledged to prioritise the provision of potable water to all communities as part of its commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which targets the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Speaking during JoyNews' manifesto debate on Thursday, November 21, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, a member of the NDC's Natural Resources, Mining, and Science Committee, stressed the critical role of water in meeting citizens’ basic needs.
She further indicated that if the NDC wins the election, they would continue with the water expansion project.
"If the NDC comes to power, we will provide potable water and expand the water distribution network. The NDC has done it before—under John Mahama, we completed projects like the Wa Water Supply Project and the expansion of the Berekese project. We are committed to continuing these efforts,” she stated.
Prof Klutse also outlined several strategies to ensure equitable access to water, particularly for rural communities.
According to her, the NDC plans to empower the Ghana Army’s 48 Engineers Regiment to provide potable water to rural areas, especially communities near freshwater sources.
Madam Klutse also highlighted the party's vision for constructing water storage facilities noting that these facilities will focus on rainwater harvesting and storage to serve areas without consistent water access.
Additionally, she said the NDC aims to modernise Ghana's water supply systems by replacing outdated pipes and expanding the water distribution network to ensure equitable water for all.
