General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) John Boadu says the claims that the Akufo-Addo government has failed to develop the six newly created regions, is untrue.
According to him, there are developmental projects ongoing in the regions, stating that the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, has been highlighting some of these projects.
“He [the Minister] tells us that 96 projects are currently ongoing with over 70% complete, while a few have been handed over. [They are] Six regional administration blocks, 24 blocks for decentralised departments, 66 staff bungalows. 30 motorbikes and 66 new vehicles have also been delivered,” Mr Boadu said.
The NPP General Secretary said that Agenda 111, which the government has launched to improve the health care system in Ghana, will also provide the regions with regional and district hospitals.
His comment comes after Former President John Dramani Mahama called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to address the developmental needs of the newly created North East Region.
Speaking at a gathering of party executives and supporters at Nalerigu, the 2020 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said, what makes a region is infrastructural projects and not just boundary demarcations.
“You cannot just create regions in name. The regions must be worthy of being called regions. And it is the infrastructure that makes a region a region.”
“If you go to Tamale, you will know that this is the Northern Region; if you go to Bolga, you know that this is the Upper East Region. If you come to Nalerigu, it is a shadow of a region,” he said.
But, John Boadu believes the NPP government’s model employed to ensure development across the country, will ensure that every region receives developmental projects.
“For the information of failed candidate Mahama, the Akufo-Addo administration has pioneered a model where government and public service buildings are spread throughout the region. The advantage over the old cluster model is that every locality within a region will have a hub around which to deepen development.”
